Overcoming Writer's Block
**Sending this blog out again, as it has been quite popular.
Yesterday I hit a wall. I had finished my last book, Little Wings, the first of the Segais Series, a week ago, and I was feeling rather flat. I began writing the second book in the series, that has no name yet, and I found it difficult getting the words out of my head onto the page. Normally I would take this to mean that I need a break, but sometimes it can simply mean I need to push through. So I did. And I was very pleased with what came out of my imagination.
But I do have some never-fail remedies to help me out of my slump.
1. Drink plenty of the herbs in the Lamiaceae family. This is the mint family or volatile oil family eg. peppermint, spearmint, thyme, rosemary, basil etc. These herbs activate ones digestive system where a large amount of serotonin is produced, thereby clarifying and energizing my mind.
2. Read quotes about success from your favorite writer, inspirational speaker, business owner, artist etc. You get the picture. They all had slumps and I can guarantee they will more slumps, that is part of being human.
3. Exercise. Get out in the elements and feel it awaken your soul. Some of my best ideas come to me when I am outside among nature and getting my heart pumping at a higher rate.
4. Eat lightly. Fresh, healthy foods. When one writes for long periods of time, one is doing a lot of sitting, which isn't the best for the digestive and circulatory systems. Hence why exercise is important. Eating heavy, unhealthy foods then sitting for long periods can make you sluggish and grumpy and then along comes a brain fog.
5. Take a break. Sometimes you just need to take a break and that's all.
Try these tips and see what happens.
Also....I view my writing as a job, my career, so a certain amount of hours have to be achieved every week, just like in your normal jobs, or else results will be minimal and I won't get paid. Simple.
